Bill Evarts

Bill Evarts is a traditional landscape photographer who mostly shoots color transparency film with a 4X5 view camera. A native Californian, he became enamored with the state through a long tradition of family camping trips. Evarts graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Classics, but his interest in the out-of-doors led him to photography as a means of sharing his enthusiasm for the natural order.

Self taught, he opened a portrait studio in the mid-1970's in Oakhurst, California. Nature photography remained a primary interest, and upon selling an image to Sierra Club Calendars after ten years of photographing weddings, school proms, rodeos, and Little League teams, he decided to pursue his true love full time.

Evarts produced the photographs and text for Torrey Pines: Landscape and Legacy (Torrey Pines Association, 1994), a book that celebrates Torrey Pines State Reserve and its namesake, one of the world's rarest trees. His work has appeared in a variety of books, magazines, and calendars that feature natural history themes. Exhibit subjects have included Torrey Pines, the rock art of California native peoples, and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

Images from his Baja California portfolio won top honors in several categories at an international photo competition in 1999 in Mexico City. He was a major contributor to the San Diego Natural History Museum's exhibition on Baja California, Desert & Sea, which was shown in 2000 at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC. Bill and his wife, Sue, live in Escondido, California.
