Artist Statement

Born in Coronado, California, Dick is one of San Diego's foremost contemporary glass artists. His glass kiln-forming technique has become more refined during his times spent at Pilchuck Glass School and through his own experimentation. Dick believes in educating people about glass, whether it is blown glass, stained glass, flame-worked glass, or his own passion, kiln-formed glass. People understanding the art of collecting glass helps every glass artist be recognized for the work that they do.

Time spent in the studio consists of design, prototyping, color blending, temperature analysis, fusing, slumping, manipulating, making and inserting inclusions and, lastly, cold working. Dick works cold with a wet belt sander, a flat lap, grinders, a glass lathe, and diamond hand pads. The finish on his pieces may be gloss or matte, carved or smooth.

The series that Dick is currently working with are stringers, wall sculpture, and high-fire, and he welcomes residential and commercial commissions.
