  Hope and Tragedy: Contemporary Paintings by Saphire
  January 21, 2010 to April 11, 2010
  The Ordover Gallery is proud to announce its first exhibition featuring paintings by Saphire. An emotive artist, she creates paintings that draw the viewer in -- one begins to contemplate the abstract figures that seemingly interweave, sway and meld into one another. Vibrant bursts of unexpected color move across the canvas in surges of emotion. In Saphire's work there are complex visual, spatial and emotional relationships between the abstracted forms. The viewer is invited to decipher and interpret these liaisons.
  
  Regarding her work, Saphire says, "I see each painting before I paint it. My work is a reflection of what is inside of me, an offshoot of my emotions. A painting might start off positive, but as I work, my emotions may change and so does the emerging piece." Saphire also relates that she works in series; she creates either three or five different paintings in each series.
  
  A prolific artist in many mediums, Saphire works in oil, acrylic, and mixed media. She often uses many layers, and includes gold leaf, translucent acrylics mixed with iridescent paints, fabrics, tissues, and paper. She pours resin over her canvases, and uses a gel resin as well. Saphire also creates monoprints, etchings, lithographs and fine art jewelry. Her work is exhibited in galleries across the country, and is in numerous private collections.
  
  In addition to work by Saphire, paintings by Sunna Bohlen and Heidi Rufeh will be shown, as well as fine art photography by Art Wolfe, Lisa Ross, Abe Ordover and Peter Fay.

  • Elizabeth Carmel: Tuscany

    Elizabeth Carmel is a recipient of the prestigious Hasselblad Master Photographer award. Each year, only 12 photographers worldwide are honored with the award and with the placement of their work in the Hasselblad collection in Sweden. Carmel, a Sierra-based photographer, specializes in unique, expressive imagery of landscapes, waterscapes and international locales. Her work combines dramatic photography, vivid colors, and artistic touches to create new, captivating visions. Her Tuscan imagery is both lyrical and dreamlike in its handling of light and atmosphere in the pastoral locale.
    
    Regarding her work, Carmel says, "I strive to create images that link us to feelings and perceptions we may not access regularly in our daily lives. I believe that great fine art photographs are a gateway through habitual thinking to a larger perspective."
    
    Through her use of a Hasselblad H1 with an ultra-high resolution 22 megapixel digital back, Carmel is able to capture subtle details and transfer them to large prints with stunning clarity and color. She does her own printing on fine art paper or canvas with long-life pigmented inks. Carmel's award winning images are in numerous galleries and private collections throughout the United States, and have been on display at the Nevada Museum of Art. Her book, Brilliant Waters, Portraits of Lake Tahoe, Yosemite and the High Sierra, included a forward by Robert Redford, and was featured in People Magazine. Carmel's imagery has also been featured in Outdoor Photographer, Sierra Magazine, and Sunset Magazine, among others.
    
    In addition to imagery by Elizabeth Carmel, photographs by Christopher Burkett, Charles Cramer, Tom O Scott, Peter Fay, Abe Ordover and Lisa Ross, as well as paintings and monoprints by Saphire, will be on display.
  • Contemporary Masters of Fine Art Photography
    July 23 through October 11, 2009
    Work by leading National Geographic photographers such as Frans Lanting and Art Wolfe. Lanting is hailed as one of the great nature photographers of our time. His influential work appears in books, magazines, and exhibitions around the world. Art Wolfe, a recipient of the coveted Alfred Eisenstaedt Magazine Photography Award, travels to the far reaches of the globe throughout the year, capturing stunning and contemplative images.
    
    Works by leading photographers Bill Atkinson, Christopher Burkett, Elizabeth Carmel, Charles Cramer, Mitch Dobrowner, Duby Tal and Linde Waidhofer, among others, will be included in the show.
    
    Dick Ditore, an artist with the invitational Little and Large exhibition, will show steel and glass sculpture along with a Calder-inspired faceted art jewelry piece. The theme of the sculpture is continued within the glass jewelry. Little and Large is coordinated with the San Diego Museum of Art's Calder exhibition.
  • The World of Ira Block: Photojournalism Spanning a Lifetime
    April 16 through July 19, 2009
    A National Geographic photographer for thirty years, Ira Block has also won numerous awards from the National Press Photographer's Association. The Ordover Gallery will display an outstanding collection of Block's dynamic and eclectic photographs, ranging from dancing Geishas in Japan to workmen on shrimp boats in the Gulf of Mexico.
    Also on display: fine art photography by Abe Ordover, Lisa Ross, Peter Fay, as well as paintings by Saphire, and glass by Dick Ditore and sculpture by Charles Sherman and Spirits in Stone.
  • Icons of the 50's and 60's: Historic Black & White Photography of Leigh Wiener (1929 - 1993), January 13 through April 12, 2009. Leigh Wiener freelanced for Life, Time, Fortune, and Sports Illustrated. He was a staff photographer at the Los Angeles Times.
  • Unearthing Masterworks - Works by Christopher Burkett, October 9, 2008 - January 11, 2009
    Burkett's unsurpassed, luminous photographs explore the beauty of light in the natural landscape. Widely regarded as a contemporary master of fine-art photography, he is also among the last of a dying breed. He is one of few remaining large-format traditionalists who shoot with 8" x 10" cameras and painstakingly print their work by hand in self-built darkrooms. Burkett's acute aesthetic vision, combined with his technical mastery, results in images that express the grace, light and splendor he sees in the natural world. The striking beauty of Burkett's photographs is also attributable to the Cibachrome paper on which he prints, as well as his highly involved masking process.
    Unearthing Masterworks featured images newly released to the public. The images were from various stages of Burkett's 30-year career.
  • Asia - Works by Art Wolfe, July 1 through October 5, 2008
    Art Wolfe, recognized throughout the world for his mastery of color, composition and perspective, has authored more than sixty books of photography. He spends nearly nine months of the year traveling on shoots. Wolfe is the recipient of a coveted Alfred Eisenstaedt Magazine Photography Award. The North American Nature Photography Association has named him "Outstanding Nature Photographer of the Year." He is a member of Canon's elite list of renowned photographers, "Explorers of Light," and Fujifilm's Talent Team. Magazines all over the world publish his photographs and stories.
